Climate Overview

Nicaragua has a tropical climate with two distinct seasons: a dry season (verano) from November to April and a rainy season (invierno) from May to October. The Pacific lowlands are hot and humid year-round with temperatures ranging from 25-35°C, while the northern highlands around Matagalpa are cooler at 15-25°C. The Caribbean coast is rainier and more humid throughout the year but has its own distinct dry periods in February-April and August-October.

🌸 Spring

Mar-May

March-April remain dry with excellent conditions. May brings the first rains, transforming landscapes to vibrant green. Shoulder period between peak season and wet season.

Tips: March-April are great for hiking before peak heat. May rains are light and refreshing. Book Semana Santa (March/April) accommodation months ahead.

Jun-Aug

Full rainy season with afternoon thunderstorms most days, especially June-July. Mornings are often clear. Surfers love the consistent Pacific swells. Landscapes are lush and green.

Tips: Start outdoor activities before noon to beat afternoon rain. Surf season is excellent. Waterfalls are at peak flow. Some volcano trails become muddy.

Sep-Nov

September-October are the wettest months with persistent rain possible. November sees decreasing rain and the first hints of the dry season returning. Less crowded and prices drop.

Tips: October is the quietest month for tourism — great for deals but expect rain. November improves rapidly and is excellent value with fewer crowds.

Dec-Feb

December-February is Nicaragua's prime travel season — dry, sunny, and warm with low humidity. Temperatures 25-32°C on the Pacific coast. Beaches and volcanoes at their best. Peak tourist season coincides with Christmas and New Year.

Tips: Book everything well ahead for December and January. December 7-8 La Purísima festival is spectacular. January and February are the most comfortable months weather-wise.

Palo de Mayo

Afro-Caribbean festival celebrating fertility and spring. Maypole dancing, colorful costumes, music, and parties. Best experienced in Bluefields and Corn Islands. African-influenced traditions blend with Nicaraguan culture.

August 1-10
Fiestas Patronales de Santo Domingo

Managua's patron saint festival featuring religious processions, concerts, traditional dances, and fairgrounds. Massive wooden statue of Santo Domingo carried through streets. Mix of indigenous and Catholic traditions.

September 15
Independence Day

National celebration of independence from Spain. Parades, flag ceremonies, traditional dances, and street parties throughout country. Students perform in blue and white (national colors). Pride and patriotic displays.

December 7-8
La Purísima

Most important Nicaraguan celebration honoring Virgin Mary. Elaborate home altars, caroling, fireworks, and gift-giving. 'La Gritería' on December 7 when people visit altars receiving traditional treats. Uniquely Nicaraguan tradition.

March-April annually
San Juan del Sur Surf Competition

International surf competition attracting pros and amateurs. Week-long event with competitions, parties, and beach activities. Good time to visit for surf culture and nightlife.
