North Holland's most iconic windmill and heritage village, located just 18km from Amsterdam. Zaanse Schans is a beautifully preserved open-air museum of 17th and 18th-century North Holland life — six working windmills, green-painted wooden houses, clog-making workshops, a cheese farm, and the world's first Albert Heijn supermarket museum. The Zaan River setting is extraordinary.

Highlights

  • Six working windmills
  • De Kat paint windmill (oldest working pigment windmill in world)
  • Traditional clog workshop
  • Cheese farm with tastings
  • Albert Heijn museum shop
  • Zaan River reflections

Tips

  • Arrive before 10:00 or after 15:00 to beat tour bus crowds. Visit on a windy day when the mills spin. The clog workshop and cheese farm are free.
