Ecomama

Ecomama sits on Valkenburgerstraat between Nieuwmarkt and Waterlooplein, close to the flea market, the Portuguese Synagogue, and a short tram or walk from Centraal Station and the Red Light District. The building was constructed with sustainability as a starting point, using reclaimed and recycled materials throughout — including furniture built from salvaged wood and a living-wall feature — which sets it apart visually from typical budget hostels and gives common areas a warm, plant-filled feel. Rooms run from mixed dorms of four to eight beds and female-only dorms up to private rooms with en-suite bathrooms, all fitted with reading lights and individual power sockets at each bed. A restaurant and bar on the ground floor serve breakfast and evening meals with an emphasis on organic and local ingredients, and a lounge area doubles as a co-working space during the day; there is no spa, pool, or fitness centre. Service is friendly and eco-conscious in tone, with a 24-hour reception and staff who highlight the hostel's sustainability practices alongside practical tips for the nearby Waterlooplein market and Nieuwmarkt square.
