Van Gogh Museum

The Van Gogh Museum at Museumplein 6 in Amsterdam holds the world's largest collection of works by Vincent van Gogh, assembled primarily from the collection amassed by his brother Theo and Theo's wife Jo Bonger. The permanent collection spans four floors of the main building, designed by Gerrit Rietveld in 1973, and traces Van Gogh's artistic development from his early dark Dutch period through his transformative time in Paris, the vivid canvases of Arles, and the troubled final year in Auvers-sur-Oise. Around 200 paintings, 500 drawings, and 750 letters are in the museum's holdings, with a significant portion on permanent display. Iconic canvases include Sunflowers, The Bedroom, Almond Blossoms, The Yellow House, and the Self-Portrait with Grey Felt Hat. Displayed alongside Van Gogh's work are pieces by contemporaries he admired or influenced — Gauguin, Toulouse-Lautrec, and Bernard — providing context for the post-Impressionist movement. The wing designed by Kisho Kurokawa and opened in 1999 houses temporary exhibitions, which have covered Monet, Manet, and other major figures. The museum's ground floor holds an excellent shop stocking high-quality art prints, books, and design objects. Visitors typically spend two to three hours on a complete visit. Museumplein outside the building is home to an open lawn frequently used for public events and picnics; the Rijksmuseum and the Stedelijk Museum for modern art are a short walk away, making the area well-suited to a full day of museum-going.
