Amsterdam Library Public Terrace

The OBA (Openbare Bibliotheek Amsterdam) at Oosterdokskade 143 in Amsterdam is the city's central public library, housed in a dramatic ten-storey building opened in 2007 and designed by Jo Coenen. The library's top-floor terrace, accessed by a public lift inside the building, is a broad open-air platform at approximately 28 metres above the city, offering free panoramic views in all directions over Amsterdam's historic centre, the IJ River, and the expanding eastern harbour district. Unlike the paid observation decks at A'DAM Lookout, the OBA terrace is entirely free and open during the library's operating hours. The terrace looks west over the Oosterdok harbour toward Central Station and the old city canals, east toward the KNSM Island and modern eastern harbour architecture, north across the IJ to Amsterdam Noord and the A'DAM Tower, and south toward the medieval core of the city. The view is lower and closer to the city fabric than A'DAM Lookout, giving a more intimate perspective on the canal ring and Central Station rooftops. A cafe operates on the top floor with terrace seating, making extended stays comfortable. The library's restaurant and cafe are open to the public without library membership. The building is five minutes on foot from Amsterdam Centraal station and directly adjacent to the NEMO Science Museum, whose own rooftop terrace is also free and provides a complementary viewpoint.
