Hotel Vajra sits in the Bhainsepati area of western Kathmandu, roughly 600 metres south of the hilltop Swayambhunath Stupa complex — the ancient monkey-temple hill overlooking the city. The stupa's eastern staircase is reachable on foot from the hotel in 10–15 minutes through forested approaches. Central Thamel is approximately 3km east by taxi; Boudha is 8km northeast.

A unique hotel built in traditional Newari style in the Bhainsepati neighbourhood near Swayambhunath, beloved by artists, academics, and repeat visitors to Nepal. The hotel features a library, rooftop terrace, cultural performances, a great restaurant, and atmospheric rooms decorated with Nepali art. The philosophy and attention to cultural authenticity set it apart from typical hotels.

The hotel was established in the 1980s as a personal project conceived by Craig Bevans, a New Zealander, with the goal of creating a culturally authentic retreat for artists, scholars, and travellers with a substantive interest in Nepal. The main buildings replicate traditional Newari palace architecture at full scale, with carved brick courtyards, tiered roofs, and authentic wooden fenestration, and the property has accumulated a significant collection of Nepali art, textiles, and religious objects displayed throughout its public areas.

The 56 rooms span Standard, Deluxe, and Suite categories across several courtyard buildings. Each room is individually decorated with original artworks and Nepali craft objects; no two rooms are identical in layout or décor. Standard rooms are modest in size but distinctive in character; roof-terrace suites are spacious with open city views across the Kathmandu roofline. Wi-Fi and basic modern amenities are available throughout.

The Vajra Restaurant serves continental, Indian, and Nepali cuisine in a dining room hung with Newari woodwork and lit by butter lamps in the evenings. A garden seating area is used in the dry season. The hotel's in-house library holds several thousand volumes on Nepal, Tibet, Himalayan natural history, South Asian art, and Buddhist philosophy, and is accessible to all guests throughout the stay.

Cultural programming distinguishes Hotel Vajra from any comparably priced accommodation in Kathmandu: regular classical music concerts, Newari dance performances, thangka painting workshops, and slide-show lectures on Himalayan subjects are held in the on-site open-air theatre. Concierge support is particularly strong for monastery visits, cultural research trips, and connections with academic institutions based in the valley.
