Hotel Shanker

Hotel Shanker occupies a 19th-century Rana palace on Lazimpat Road in northern Kathmandu, a boulevard lined with embassies and diplomatic residences. The property sits approximately 1.5km north of Thamel's main gate and 2km from the Rani Pokhari lake and Indra Chowk. Narayanhiti Palace Museum is roughly 1km south along the same road. The neighbourhood is quieter and more residential than Thamel, attracting NGO workers, development-sector visitors, and travellers who prefer a calmer base.

The palace was constructed for one of Nepal's aristocratic Rana families and retains its Neoclassical European facade with white stucco colonnades, ornate balustrades, and a grand formal entrance staircase. The interior preserves original high-plastered ceilings, chandeliered ballrooms, and teak parquet flooring. A rear annex wing added in later decades houses additional rooms in a more contemporary style, bringing the total room count to 94.

Room categories span Standard, Deluxe, Junior Suite, and Suite. Palace-wing rooms in the original building are the most characterful, with high ceilings, period-style furnishings, and tall shuttered windows overlooking the garden; the annex wing provides more conventional hotel fitments. All rooms include flat-screen television, air conditioning, and Wi-Fi.

The Hamro Café and Grill serves Nepali and continental cuisine from breakfast through dinner; the poolside garden terrace operates as an outdoor dining area during the dry months. The main ballroom, with its original chandeliers and mirrored walls, is the largest heritage event space in Kathmandu and hosts weddings, corporate functions, and cultural galas. A small outdoor swimming pool occupies the rear garden. Tour-desk services, airport transfers, and vehicle hire are handled at the front desk. The hotel draws cultural tourists, NGO workers, and travellers seeking heritage atmosphere at mid-luxury price points.
