Getting Around Yangon 2026

Transport in Yangon decoded — what to use for which journey, and what each option costs.

Yangon is Myanmar's largest city and former capital, a humid river port where the golden Shwedagon Pagoda rises above a downtown of colonial buildings, tea shops, markets and Buddhist temples.

Public
YBS city buses and the Circular Railway are cheap but have limited English signage and variable reliability.
Taxi
Ride-hailing and street taxis are the most practical option for visitors; agree fares before riding.
Rental
Self-driving is not advisable: traffic is heavy and driving rules are unfamiliar. Cars with drivers are widely available.
Walking
The downtown grid is walkable in the cooler hours; pavements are uneven and broken in places.
