Benguerra Lodge sits on the western side of Benguerra Island, the second-largest island in the Bazaruto Archipelago, approximately 12 kilometres north of Bazaruto Island and about 15 kilometres offshore from Vilanculos. The lodge is accessible exclusively by light aircraft from Vilanculos Airport — a 15-minute flight — or by private speedboat arrangement. The island forms part of Bazaruto National Park, which encompasses a protected marine environment of seagrass beds, coral reefs, and mangrove systems supporting one of the last viable dugong populations in the western Indian Ocean.
The lodge accommodates guests in 13 casinha-style villas and garden villas set along the beachfront and within the island's interior dune vegetation. Casinhas are thatched structures inspired by traditional Mozambican architecture, with open-plan interiors, four-poster beds with mosquito nets, private plunge pools, and outdoor showers opening onto enclosed garden areas. Two larger family villas offer additional bedroom capacity. The architecture emphasises materials and forms that integrate with the island landscape rather than replicating a conventional resort aesthetic.
Dining at Benguerra is communal in character: guests are seated together at set times for meals served from a kitchen working closely with local fishing communities.
