Base Backpackers

Base Backpackers occupies a building on Avenida 24 de Julho in central Maputo, one of the city's main commercial arteries running east-west through the baixa district. The hostel is within walking distance of the railway station — a 1910 building designed by Gustave Eiffel's engineering firm — as well as Maputo's iron market, the city's colonial-era fort, and a cluster of restaurants and bars that form the central nightlife zone.

The property offers a mix of dormitory beds in shared rooms and private rooms for travellers preferring more space. Dormitories are air-conditioned and fitted with bunk beds, individual power sockets, reading lights, and secure lockers. Bathrooms are shared and cleaned multiple times daily. Private rooms are basic but functional, with double beds and access to shared shower facilities. The hostel caters primarily to backpackers crossing between South Africa and Mozambique and serves as a stopping point for overlanding groups on east African routes.

The rooftop bar is the social centrepiece of the property, offering views across the baixa district and a programme of evening events that varies from quiz nights to barbecues depending on occupancy. A tour desk on the ground floor arranges day trips to Inhaca Island — roughly a 60-minute ferry crossing from Maputo Harbour — Maputo Special Reserve, and onward transport connections to Tofo and the Bazaruto Archipelago.

Breakfast is available for purchase each morning. The surrounding Avenida 24 de Julho area has numerous local restaurants, cafés, and street food vendors accessible on foot. Staff speak English and Portuguese and are familiar with regional travel practicalities including border crossings, chapa routes, and ferry schedules.
