Marrakesh-Safi is Morocco's most visited region, anchored by Marrakesh — the Red City — a UNESCO World Heritage medina teeming with souks, palaces, and the legendary Jemaa el-Fna square. Beyond the city, the region spans from the High Atlas Mountains to the Atlantic coast at Essaouira, offering everything from quad biking in the Agafay Desert to surfing at Sidi Kaouki.

Demands good physical fitness, prior multi-day trekking experience, and appropriate equipment. Involves high altitudes, steep ascents, and variable mountain weather. A licensed guide is strongly advised.
Technical mountain routes requiring specialised gear, winter conditions experience, and certified high-mountain guide accompaniment. Reserved for experienced alpinists during snow or ice conditions.

Local hazards
What to watch out for on the trail.
Hazard: Hazard Altitude sickness (acute mountain sickness), Mitigation Ascend gradually; do not push through symptoms such as severe headache, nausea, or confusion. Spend a night at the Toubkal Refuge (3,207m) before attempting the summit. Descend immediately if symptoms worsen. Avoid alcohol the night before a high-altitude day. Adequate hydration (at least 3 litres per day) is essential above 3,000m.
Hazard: Hazard Flash floods in wadi beds, Mitigation Never camp in or cross a dry wadi (riverbed) during or after rain, even distant upstream rain. Flash floods can arrive without warning. Check the weather forecast before entering valley trails and heed local advice. The Ourika Valley has a history of severe flooding.
Hazard: Hazard Summer heat exhaustion, Mitigation Start hikes before 07:00 in summer months. Carry a minimum of 3 litres of water and a water-purification method. Wear a sun hat and high-SPF sunscreen. Rest in shade during the midday hours (11:00–15:00). Recognise symptoms of heat exhaustion (heavy sweating, weakness, fast weak pulse) and cool the person down and hydrate immediately.
Hazard: Hazard Snow and ice on high routes in winter, Mitigation Do not attempt passes or the Toubkal summit between December and February without crampons, an ice axe, and demonstrated winter mountaineering competence. Hire a certified FRMF (Fédération Royale Marocaine de Ski et Montagne) licensed mountain guide. Check conditions at the Imlil guides bureau before departing.
Hazard: Hazard Getting lost on unmarked trails, Mitigation Download offline maps (Maps.me or Gaia GPS) and a GPS track before leaving mobile coverage. Hire a local licensed guide for any route above Imlil. Inform your accommodation of your planned route and expected return time.
Hazard: Hazard High UV radiation at altitude, Mitigation UV intensity increases approximately 10% for every 1,000m of elevation. Apply SPF 50+ sunscreen generously and reapply every 90 minutes. Wear UV-blocking sunglasses and a wide-brimmed hat. Snow at high altitude reflects UV and compounds the risk.
