Khongor Guesthouse

Khongor Guesthouse occupies a position roughly 3 kilometres from the base of Khongoryn Els — the sweeping sand dune system that stretches 180 kilometres along the Ömnögovi desert floor and rises to nearly 300 metres at its highest point. The nearest regional hub is Dalanzadgad, approximately 180 kilometres to the northeast, making the guesthouse one of the closest fixed accommodations to the singing dunes. The property sits within the Gobi Gurvansaikhan National Park buffer zone, surrounded by saxaul scrub and occasional livestock trails used by local herder families.

Accommodation consists of traditional Mongolian gers — round felt-insulated circular structures — arranged in a compact yard. Each ger contains basic wooden-framed beds, a central iron stove that burns coal or argal for heat during cold nights, and minimal shared furnishings. The structures are authentic rather than resort-styled, giving guests direct contact with the nomadic design that has served Mongolia's steppe environment for centuries. Bathrooms are shared facilities maintained by the resident family.

Meals are cooked by the owners and reflect standard Gobi pastoral diet: tsuivan noodles with mutton, steamed buuz dumplings, suutei tsai (salted milk tea), and seasonal dairy products. Breakfast is typically included in room rates; dinner requires advance arrangement on the day. The family maintains a camel herd and organises guided excursions to the dune crest, as well as visits to the Khongoriin river valley and nearby nomadic herder encampments. Staff speak sufficient English to communicate tour logistics and can connect guests with local guides for multi-day Gobi routes extending to the Flaming Cliffs at Bayanzag or the Eagle Valley. The guesthouse is well suited to budget-conscious independent travellers, overland group tour participants, and visitors who prioritise proximity to the dunes over resort-level comfort.
