Climate Overview

Moldova has a temperate continental climate with warm summers, cold winters, and moderate rainfall spread throughout the year. The country's central European position gives it four distinct seasons: mild springs with wildflowers and blossoms (April-May), hot dry summers ideal for the grape harvest (June-September), beautiful golden autumns with wine festivals (October), and cold winters with occasional snow (December-February). Average annual temperature is around 10°C (50°F), with July averaging 22°C (72°F) and January around -3°C (27°F).

Seasonal Breakdown

Detailed information for each season.

🌸 Spring

March-May

Temperatures rise from 5-10°C in March to 15-20°C in May. Wildflowers bloom across the countryside and orchards blossom beautifully. Light rain is common but days are increasingly pleasant. Excellent time for hiking and countryside visits.

Tips: Pack layers — mornings can be cold even in May. Waterproof jacket useful for spring showers.

☀️ Summer

June-August

Hot and sunny with temperatures regularly reaching 28-35°C. Dry conditions make this ideal weather for outdoor sightseeing, though the heat can be intense midday. Wine grapes ripen throughout summer leading to the September harvest.

Tips: Carry water and sunscreen. Plan outdoor activities for early morning or evening. Underground wineries offer cool respite on hot days.

🍂 Fall

September-November

One of the best seasons — warm in September (20-25°C), cooling to 10-15°C in October with spectacular foliage colors. The grape harvest and National Wine Day (first October weekend) make autumn Moldova's most festive season.

Tips: Layer up as temperatures drop quickly in October-November. Rain increases in November. Book National Wine Day accommodation months in advance.

❄️ Winter

December-February

Cold with temperatures often below freezing (−5 to 2°C). Snowfall is possible, particularly December-January. Christmas markets in Chisinau center add charm to the cold months. Far fewer tourists mean better prices and more authentic experiences.
