Climate Overview

The Federated States of Micronesia has a tropical oceanic climate with warm temperatures year-round, averaging 27-30°C (80-86°F). There are two distinct seasons: a dry season from December to April with lower humidity and calmer seas, and a wet season from May to November when typhoons can affect the northern states. Rain falls year-round in Pohnpei — one of the world's wettest inhabited places — but even the wet season allows plenty of outdoor activity between showers.

Seasonal Breakdown

Detailed information for each season.

🌸 Spring

Mar-May

Transition from dry to wet season — March is excellent with Yap Day festival and peak manta season; April-May see increasing rainfall and humidity but still very good diving conditions

Tips: March is the best overall month to visit FSM — book accommodation far in advance for Yap Day. Pack a light rain jacket from April.

☀️ Summer

Jun-Aug

Wet season arrives in earnest with daily tropical showers and elevated typhoon risk particularly for Yap and Chuuk. Temperatures remain warm and diving continues but seas can be rougher. Lowest tourist numbers and hotel prices.

Tips: Bring quality waterproof gear; check typhoon forecasts before inter-island travel; book flexible-cancellation flights for this period.

🍂 Fall

Sep-Nov

Peak typhoon season for northern Micronesia (Yap, Chuuk) running through October. Pohnpei and Kosrae less affected. Rain remains frequent but costs are lowest and crowds minimal.

Tips: Avoid Yap and Chuuk October-November if possible; Pohnpei and Kosrae more manageable but pack full rain gear.
