Zacatecas is a landlocked state on Mexico's north-central high plains, built on more than four centuries of silver-mining wealth. Its capital, also named Zacatecas, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site famous for pink cantera-stone Baroque and Churrigueresque architecture spilling down steep hillsides, the Cerro de la Bufa cable car, and the former Mina El Eden silver mine. Beyond the capital, the state offers the Pueblos Magicos of Jerez, Sombrerete, and Pinos, the pre-Hispanic ruins of La Quemada, and the mining hub of Fresnillo, the state's most populous municipality.
Zacatecas city sits at roughly 2,440 meters (8,010 feet) on the central Mexican highland plateau, built into a narrow ravine between hills including Cerro de la Bufa. This altitude gives it a cool, semi-arid highland climate (bordering the temperate highland Cwb classification): mild-to-warm days most of the year but distinctly cool to cold nights year-round, even in the height of summer. The rainy season runs roughly June through September, bringing brief but sometimes heavy afternoon and evening thunderstorms, especially in July and August. Winters (December-February) are dry and sunny by day but regularly bring near-freezing or below-freezing overnight temperatures, particularly in January. Spring (March-May) is the driest and warmest stretch, with May typically the hottest month before the rains arrive.

Spring
Months: Mar-May
Warm, dry days (23-29°C) with strong highland sun and clear skies, and little to no rain until late May. Nights remain cool even as days warm quickly, and this is generally the most comfortable season for walking the steep historic-center streets before the rains begin.
Summer
Months: Jun-Sep
The rainy season, with mild-to-warm days (23-27°C) interrupted by short, sometimes intense afternoon or evening thunderstorms, especially in July and August, the wettest months. Mornings are usually clear and sunny, with rain typically arriving later in the day; the surrounding hills green up noticeably.
Fall

Rain tapers off quickly through October, leaving mild, pleasant days (21-23°C) and increasingly cool, crisp nights. Skies clear and the surrounding countryside remains green from the summer rains, making this an excellent shoulder season for sightseeing and day trips.
