Fresnillo and the Santuario de Plateros

Fresnillo lies about 61 km northwest of Zacatecas city on Federal Highway 45, a drive of 48 to 55 minutes; frequent regional buses from the Central de Autobuses cover the same route in a similar time. The Santuario de Plateros sits a further 5 km beyond Fresnillo's center, reachable by local taxi or a short additional drive, making the two sites an easy combined half-day or full-day trip.\n\nFresnillo has been one of the world's most productive silver-mining districts since the colonial era, and the modern Fresnillo mine remains among the largest primary silver operations globally. The city's historic center reflects that mining wealth in its plaza and parish church, though Fresnillo today is a working city rather than a polished tourist showcase, giving it a more everyday, lived-in character than Zacatecas city or the Pueblos Magicos.\n\nPlateros, just outside Fresnillo, is built entirely around the Santuario del Santo Nino de Atocha, a basilica housing a small venerated image of the Christ Child credited with numerous miracles. It draws pilgrims from across northern and central Mexico year-round, with the largest crowds arriving for the July 25 feast day. The sanctuary's plaza is lined with shops selling religious items, candles, and ex-voto milagros, alongside stalls selling local sweets and snacks.\n\nA workable day starts with a late-morning look at Fresnillo's plaza and parish church, followed by lunch, then the short trip to Plateros for the sanctuary in the afternoon, when the light through its windows and the plaza atmosphere are at their best. Restaurants in both towns serve regional Zacatecan fare, with mains typically MXN 100-200. The trip is comfortable year-round, though July 25 and the weeks around it bring significantly larger pilgrim crowds and busier roads.
