Gran Museo del Mundo Maya

Opened in 2012, the Gran Museo del Mundo Maya is Yucatán's principal museum dedicated to Maya civilization, built as a large contemporary structure on the northern edge of Mérida whose exterior facade is designed to evoke a ceiba tree, the sacred tree of Maya cosmology. The museum's permanent collection draws on artifacts recovered from archaeological sites across the state, including Chichén Itzá, Uxmal, Ek Balam, and Mayapán, alongside pieces on loan from other Mexican collections. Exhibits are organized thematically rather than strictly chronologically, moving visitors through sections on Maya cosmology and the creation narrative of the Popol Vuh, hieroglyphic writing and the Maya calendar system, daily life and agriculture, and the region's continuing indigenous Maya culture and language into the present day. Notable pieces include carved stelae, painted ceramics, jade funerary masks, and a full-scale reproduction of a section of the Chichén Itzá ball court. A nightly outdoor light-and-sound show is projected onto the building's ceiba-inspired facade as a free public spectacle. The museum's design and thematic curatorial approach, developed with input from Mexican and international Maya scholars, positions it as a complement to visiting the archaeological zones themselves rather than a substitute, since most large-scale monumental architecture remains on-site rather than in the collection.
