Uxmal Archaeological Trail Loop

The Uxmal Archaeological Trail Loop begins at the visitor entrance off Km 78 of the Mérida-Campeche highway (Highway 261), roughly 80 km south of Mérida in the municipality of Santa Elena, Yucatán. Paved parking is available at the site, and admission includes access to the paved walking paths that wind through the Puuc-style ruins; no separate hiking permit is required beyond the standard INAH entrance ticket. The loop covers 2 to 3 km with negligible elevation gain, since climbing the 35-metre Pyramid of the Magician has been prohibited for safety reasons for many years. The path surface is a mix of stone paving and packed gravel, entirely flat and free of technical difficulty, making it accessible to casual walkers of most fitness levels. Exposure to the sun is significant, as the site sits in open grassland with only scattered shade trees near the entrance plaza and along the Nunnery Quadrangle; midday heat can be intense from March through September. From the entrance, the route passes the steep-sided Pyramid of the Magician, continues through the Nunnery Quadrangle's four ornately carved buildings, and loops past the Ball Court, the Governor's Palace, and the House of the Turtles before returning to the entrance. A natural turn-around point for visitors with limited time is the Nunnery Quadrangle, roughly a third of the way around the loop, which contains some of the finest Puuc-style stone mosaic facades on the peninsula. There are no water sources inside the archaeological zone itself, though bottled water and shaded rest areas are available near the entrance building and small shops just outside the gate. Restrooms are located at the visitor center only, so hikers should plan bathroom breaks before setting out. The site also hosts an evening sound-and-light show that uses the same paths, offering a cooler, atmospheric alternative to a daytime walk.
