Ek Balam is small enough to see thoroughly in under two hours, yet it holds one of the best-preserved stucco monuments in the Maya world. The site's main structure, known as the Acropolis or the Torre, rises in stepped tiers to a summit platform, and about two-thirds of the way up, a wide doorway called the Entrance to the Underworld frames an exceptionally intact stucco frieze of a monster-mouth facade flanked by winged, jaguar-toothed figures believed to represent guardians of the tomb of the ruler Ukit Kan Lek Tok', buried within the structure. Unlike Chichén Itzá and Uxmal, Ek Balam still permits visitors to climb the Acropolis's steep original staircase, and the summit rewards the climb with a wide, unbroken view over the surrounding jungle canopy, with no other structures visible above the treeline. The compact plaza also includes an oval structure and a ceremonial arch, both easily covered on the way to or from the main pyramid. Because the site is smaller and less visited than the peninsula's headline ruins, mornings before 10AM are notably quiet even in high season. Many visitors combine the roughly 30-minute drive north of Valladolid with a stop afterward at one of the area's cenotes to cool off following the climb.
