Playa Anton Lizardo

Playa Anton Lizardo lies about 23 kilometers south of Veracruz port in the fishing village of the same name, in Alvarado municipality, and functions primarily as a gateway to the offshore reefs of the Sistema Arrecifal Veracruzano rather than as a lounging beach. The sand is coarse and workaday rather than manicured, and the water close to shore is calm but not especially clear, since visibility improves markedly once boats reach the reef sites further out. The shoreline is open and gently curving, fronting the village and the naval academy nearby, with modest wind exposure typical of the open Gulf coast. The atmosphere is unmistakably a working fishing and sailing village rather than a resort: dive shops and boat charter operators line the waterfront, sailing clubs and cadets from the nearby naval academy are a constant presence, and simple palapa restaurants serve the day's catch. Facilities for casual beachgoers are limited -- there is no significant sunbed or umbrella rental, and parking is informal -- since most visitors come specifically to arrange a boat trip rather than to spend the day on the sand itself. Diving and snorkeling excursions typically depart from the village pier and head to reef sites such as Isla Verde and the surrounding marine park, which protect some of the clearer, more biodiverse water near Veracruz. Reaching Anton Lizardo requires a rental car or taxi along the coastal road from Veracruz port, as there is no dedicated tourist bus service.
