Zona Arqueologica de Cempoala

Cempoala sits amid sugarcane fields near Ursulo Galvan and preserves the ceremonial core of the Totonac city that Hernan Cortes visited in 1519 on his march toward Tenochtitlan, where he negotiated the first indigenous alliance against Moctezuma's empire. Visitors walk a compact circuit of stuccoed platform mounds, including the Templo Mayor, the circular Temple of the Wind God (Ehecatl), and the walled Gran Piramide complex, all originally covered in painted plaster that 16th-century Spanish chroniclers compared to the whitewashed towers of Seville. Low perimeter walls and a defensive circuit wall around parts of the site hint at Cempoala's role as a fortified regional capital before its alliance with the Spanish. A small site museum near the entrance displays ceramics, stone tools, and figurines recovered during excavation, along with panels explaining the Cortes-Cempoala alliance. A visit to the plazas and platforms plus the museum takes about ninety minutes to two hours; the flat, open layout makes it one of the more manageable archaeological sites in the region to walk. The tops of the larger platforms, reached by short stairways, give the best views across the whole ceremonial precinct and the surrounding cane fields. The site sees far fewer visitors than El Tajin, so even midday visits are usually uncrowded, though the shadeless plazas get hot; morning visits are more comfortable.
