Laguna de Catemaco

Laguna de Catemaco fills a volcanic crater in the Los Tuxtlas cloud-forest region of southern Veracruz, ringed by jungle-covered hills and dotted with small islands, the best known of which, Isla de los Changos (Monkey Island), holds an introduced colony of stump-tailed macaques originally brought for behavioral research. Boats depart from the malecon in Catemaco town for tours that typically loop past the monkey island, a shoreline shrine to the Virgen del Carmen accessible only by water, and areas of dense lakeshore vegetation where herons and other waterbirds are commonly seen. Boatmen generally narrate the region's reputation for brujeria, a traditional folk-healing and witchcraft culture tied to Catemaco that draws its own visitors independent of the lake itself. A standard boat tour covering the main stops runs about two to three hours, with boats generally shared among several passengers at a set per-boat rate rather than sold as individual tickets. Morning departures offer the calmest water and the best chance of seeing the monkeys active before the midday heat sets in; afternoon tours can face choppier water if lake winds pick up. The town's malecon itself, with lakeside restaurants serving local tegogolo snails and fried fish, makes a comfortable base before or after a tour.
