Dulces Tradicionales Los Portales occupies a run of small candy stalls under the colonial arcades of the Pasaje de los Portales in central Huamantla, a town famed across Tlaxcala state for its confectionery traditions. The goods here are not generic tourist sweets but Huamantla specialties: alfeñique sugar figures molded into skulls, animals, and saints, muégano bars of caramelized fried dough, and crystallized fruit sweets made from local quince, fig, and pumpkin. Vendors are typically the same families who have made these candies for generations, so quality and authenticity are high, though a few stalls also stock generic packaged sweets aimed at bus-tour visitors, and the difference is easy to spot by asking what is made in-house that day. Prices are low and largely fixed, with cash the near-universal payment method; heavy bargaining is uncommon given how inexpensive the sweets already are. The arcade is shaded and pleasant to browse, busiest on weekends and during Huamantla's August festival season, and there are no full meals on offer, only sweets and occasional coffee stalls. The corner stalls nearest the main plaza tend to have the freshest alfeñique.
