Laguna del Carpintero Reflections

Laguna del Carpintero is a large urban lagoon inside Parque Metropolitano in central Tampico, and it offers two distinct frames depending on the hour. At sunrise, the water is at its calmest, producing mirror reflections of the shoreline mangroves and the resident herons, pelicans and American crocodiles that patrol the banks; the low sun sits behind the photographer, giving flat, even front light across the water. After dark, the frame flips: the illuminated Ferris wheel and the park's boardwalk lights reflect in long, colorful streaks across the still lagoon surface, best captured from the boardwalk on the park's northern edge looking south. Dry-season months, roughly October through April, bring calmer water and clearer air with less humidity haze over Tamaulipas, while the rainy season from June to September can stir the surface with wind and afternoon storms. The park draws steady foot and jogging traffic throughout the day, but the lagoon's edges are wide enough that a clear tripod position is rarely hard to find outside of weekend festival days, when the boardwalk near the Ferris wheel gets busiest in the evening. Laguna del Carpintero is a free municipal park with no entrance fee and no permit required for tripod or handheld photography; wildlife should be photographed from the boardwalk rather than approached, since the crocodile population is wild and unfenced along parts of the shoreline. Drone use is discouraged near the aviary and wildlife areas due to disturbance to nesting birds. The best vantage points are the boardwalk sections closest to the Ferris wheel for night reflections and the quieter southern mangrove paths for early-morning wildlife shots.
