Poza Azul de San José

Poza Azul de San José is a natural swimming hole within the Reserva de la Biosfera El Cielo, reached from the town of Gómez Farías, Tamaulipas, via a 4x4 vehicle approach on unpaved roads. The pool's clear, deep-blue water, fed by a spring-influenced river system in the reserve, makes it a popular destination for swimming and photography within the cloud-forest and tropical forest zones of El Cielo. A visit is effectively a half-day undertaking, since the 4x4 approach from Gómez Farías takes about two hours each way in the dry season, in addition to time spent swimming and exploring the pool area itself. Because there is no public transit or paved access, visitors arrange a local guide and 4x4 vehicle in Gómez Farías, with the vehicle fee typically shared among passengers in the group. The dry season, from November to April, is by far the best time to visit, since it keeps the unpaved access road passable and allows a full daylight round trip; the rainy season can make the road difficult or impassable. Morning departures are recommended to allow enough daylight for both the drive and time at the pool before the return trip. The remote setting and clear water make Poza Azul one of the more physically demanding but rewarding natural attractions in this part of Tamaulipas, best suited to visitors comfortable with rough roads and a full day of travel.
