Sonora is a vast desert state in northwestern Mexico bordering Arizona, spanning the Sonoran Desert from the Sea of Cortez coastline to the Sierra Madre Occidental foothills. Its capital, Hermosillo, sits at the base of Cerro de la Campana, while the coast delivers the resort towns of San Carlos and Puerto Peñasco (Rocky Point), the historic port of Guaymas, and the UNESCO-listed volcanic dunes of El Pinacate y Gran Desierto de Altar. Inland, the restored silver-mining Pueblo Mágico of Álamos preserves one of Mexico's best-kept colonial cores, far from the standard tourist circuit.
Sonora sits almost entirely within the Sonoran Desert and has one of Mexico's hottest and driest climates: Hermosillo and the interior regularly see summer highs of 40-45C (104-113F) between June and September, among the highest sustained temperatures of any major Mexican city, while winters (November-February) are warm and pleasant with daytime highs around 22-26C (72-79F) and cool nights. The Sea of Cortez coast (Guaymas, San Carlos, Puerto Peñasco) is tempered somewhat by ocean breezes but still runs very hot in summer with added humidity. Rainfall is sparse and concentrated in a short monsoon season (July-September) that brings brief, sometimes intense afternoon thunderstorms (the North American Monsoon), otherwise skies are reliably clear and sunny year-round. Winter and early spring (November-April) are by far the most comfortable and popular time to visit.
