Los Mochis is a young city by Mexican standards, laid out in the late 19th century around Albert Kimsey Owen's American utopian colony and the sugar industry that grew up around it, which is why its street grid and civic buildings feel more planned than colonial. It functions mainly as the practical base for travellers heading to El Fuerte and the Copper Canyon railway or the port of Topolobampo, rather than as a destination with historic monuments of its own. Parque Sinaloa, a central city park, is the main green space for a walk between transport connections.
