Laguna de la Media Luna

Laguna de la Media Luna is a natural spring-fed lagoon near the town of Rioverde in the semi-desert lowlands of eastern San Luis Potosí, roughly two hours southeast of the state capital by car. Shaped like a crescent moon, for which it is named, the lagoon is fed by underwater springs that maintain a nearly constant water temperature of around 28°C (82°F) year-round, regardless of the season, and produce visibility often exceeding 30 meters, making it one of the clearest natural bodies of water in Mexico. The clarity and constant temperature have made it a nationally known destination for freediving and snorkeling, with several natural springs and underwater caves visible from the surface, along with submerged fossils and archaeological remains that add historical interest to the swim. Beyond the diving community, the lagoon functions as a popular natural wellness and relaxation destination for a broader range of visitors, who come simply to float in the buoyant, mineral-rich water, surrounded by reeds, palm trees, and the arid Rioverde valley landscape. The site is managed as a family-oriented eco-park with changing facilities, lockers, palapa-shaded rest areas, and food vendors near the entrance, and lifeguards are typically present during peak visiting hours. Because the water remains warm year-round, the lagoon draws visitors even in the cooler winter months when the surrounding desert air can be noticeably cold, creating a striking contrast between the warm water and cooler surroundings. Weekends and Mexican school holidays bring the largest crowds, particularly from nearby Rioverde and Ciudad Fernández, while weekday mornings offer a quieter, more contemplative experience for those seeking the wellness rather than the recreational side of the lagoon. Basic snorkeling gear can sometimes be rented on-site, though serious freedivers typically bring their own equipment.
