El Mexico de Frida

El Mexico de Frida is a three-story restaurant in the Jardin neighborhood of San Luis Potosi, decorated throughout with murals and portraits of Frida Kahlo. There is no celebrity chef attached; the appeal is the setting and a menu of Mexican regional dishes with a strong Huasteca Potosina thread, including enchiladas potosinas and zacahuil, a large tamal traditionally made in Tancanhuitz and wrapped in banana leaf, that has become something of a signature order here. Other dishes include chile ancho relleno and standard Mexican regional plates. The rooms are colorful and mural-covered on every level, making the restaurant as popular for photos as for the food, with a casual, come-as-you-are dress code and a lively, sometimes loud, family atmosphere, especially at weekend lunch. There is no notable wine list; beer, mezcal, and aguas frescas cover the drinks menu. Reservations are recommended for weekend dinner service, when the multi-story dining rooms fill with both tourists and local groups, but same-day tables are usually available on weekdays.
