Cascadas de Tamasopo

Cascadas de Tamasopo is a wide, tiered waterfall on the Río Tamasopo in the Huasteca Potosina region of San Luis Potosí, framed by limestone cliffs and jungle vegetation. The most effective composition places the full width of the falls in frame from the opposite riverbank, with palm trees and rock outcrops as side framing; a closer angle from the rocks at the base isolates a single cascade for long-exposure water shots. Soft, even light in mid-morning, before the sun rises directly overhead, avoids the harsh highlight blowout that direct midday sun causes on the white water. September through December, following the rainy season, gives the widest and fullest falls with the most volume, while the dry months of April and May can reduce the falls to a few narrow channels. The site draws tour vans from Ciudad Valles and Tamasopo starting around midday, so arriving in early morning gives clearer water and fewer swimmers in frame. There is an entrance fee at the site gate, and a short paved and dirt path leads to the main viewing area; a neutral density filter is useful for long-exposure shots since the falls sit in open, bright conditions.
