Ah Cacao Chocolate Café opened its original location on Quinta Avenida in Playa del Carmen in the early 2000s and has since become a fixture of the pedestrian strip, built around the idea of showcasing Mexican cacao in both drinkable and edible forms. There is no chef pedigree involved; the focus instead is a café-and-bakery format built on espresso drinks and house-made chocolate. The Mayan cacao latte, blending espresso with dark chocolate and a hint of chili and cinnamon in a nod to pre-Hispanic cacao preparations, is the signature order, alongside a chocolate croissant baked fresh daily and an avocado toast with chili that has become popular with the health-conscious brunch crowd. There is no wine list, though the café does serve chocolate-based cocktails and cold brew in addition to its espresso menu. The dining room mixes indoor air-conditioned seating with a street-facing terrace overlooking Quinta Avenida's foot traffic, giving it a bright, casual, people-watching atmosphere rather than an intimate one; noise levels rise during peak morning and evening hours when the avenue is busiest. There is no dress code beyond standard beachwear-friendly casual attire common throughout Playa del Carmen.
