Xpu-Ha Beach

Xpu-Ha is a wide crescent of white sand along the coast between Akumal and Playa del Carmen, reached by turning off the main highway onto a dirt access road rather than a direct beachfront entrance, which has kept the beach comparatively undeveloped despite its location in the heart of the Riviera Maya. The water here is unusually clear even close to shore, with a coral reef running not far offshore that produces good snorkeling without requiring a boat trip. A handful of small beach clubs along the sand offer chair rentals, food, and drinks, but long stretches of the beach remain open and free of any development, in contrast to the resort-lined beaches further north and south. Because the access road discourages casual drop-in traffic, Xpu-Ha sees noticeably fewer visitors than beaches directly on the highway, and even in high season it is possible to find open stretches of sand away from the beach clubs. A visit typically runs a half day to a full day, with morning offering the calmest water for swimming and snorkeling before any afternoon wind picks up. The beach's soft sand slopes gently into the water, making entry easy, and the absence of large hotels along this stretch means the view up and down the coast remains largely open ocean and palm trees rather than resort towers.
