Sierra Gorda Franciscan Missions Trail (Landa de Matamoros to Tilaco)

The Sierra Gorda Franciscan Missions Trail follows old inter-village mule tracks through the Landa de Matamoros municipality, with a common starting point near the Misión de Nuestra Señora de la Luz in the town centre. The route is walked in variable stages of roughly 8 to 15 km, connecting Landa de Matamoros toward villages such as Tilaco, home to another of the UNESCO-listed 18th-century Franciscan mission churches built under the Sierra Gorda mission system. The terrain is rolling mountain countryside, with repeated climbs and descents between valleys on dirt tracks, packed earth, and occasional stretches of loose rock, offering little continuous shade outside of forested draws. Waymarking along the historic tracks is inconsistent, and many hikers use a GPS track or detailed map to stay on route between villages, since services and signage thin out considerably away from the main highway. Each stage typically takes 3 to 5 hours depending on the section walked and the pace kept on the ups and downs. Along the way, the mission churches themselves, along with small rural settlements, serve as natural rest points and turn-around options for hikers not attempting a multi-day traverse. There are no formal refuge huts or water sources along most stretches, so hikers carry supplies between villages, where basic food and lodging can usually be found.
