Misiones Franciscanas de la Sierra Gorda (Jalpan de Serra)

The Misión de Santiago de Jalpan is the largest and most accessible of the five UNESCO-listed Franciscan missions of the Sierra Gorda, built under Fray Junípero Serra in the mid-18th century in Jalpan de Serra, a mountain town roughly 3.5 hours from Santiago de Querétaro. Visitors examine the mission's richly carved polychrome facade, which blends Baroque, indigenous, and folk motifs unique to the Sierra Gorda missions, then step inside the simpler nave. A visit to Jalpan alone takes about an hour, but most travelers plan a full day to also visit one or two of the other four missions scattered across the Sierra Gorda (Concá, Landa, Tilaco, and Tancoyol), each with its own distinct facade carvings. The dry-season months from November to March bring cooler, clearer weather for the mountain drive, while the rainy summer months can make the winding highway more difficult. Weekday visits avoid the modest weekend crowds that gather for Mass and local markets in the town plaza.
