Puebla is a central Mexican state anchored by Puebla de Zaragoza, a UNESCO World Heritage colonial capital famous for baroque Talavera-tiled churches, the birthplace of mole poblano, and the site of the 1862 Battle of Puebla that gave rise to Cinco de Mayo. Just west of the capital, the town of Cholula holds the Great Pyramid of Tlachihualtepetl, the largest pyramid by volume on Earth, while the twin volcanoes Popocatépetl and Iztaccíhuatl dominate the state's western skyline.
Puebla city sits in a high mountain valley at roughly 2,135m elevation, giving it a mild, temperate climate year-round — warm sunny days, cool nights, and a defined rainy season from May through October. Nearby Cholula shares essentially the same climate. The Sierra Norte region toward Cuetzalan is cooler and cloudier due to higher elevation and closer exposure to Gulf-facing weather systems, while lower-lying parts of the state toward Izúcar de Matamoros are noticeably warmer and drier.
