Piedra Grande Hut Approach Trail, Pico de Orizaba

The approach to the Piedra Grande hut on Pico de Orizaba follows a 22 km unpaved 4x4 road from the town of Tlachichuca, Puebla, typically covered by private vehicle or an arranged shuttle in about 40 minutes to a half-day depending on road conditions. The road climbs roughly 1,700 m from Tlachichuca to the hut at 4,260 m, and while most of this elevation is covered by vehicle, visitors typically add a 1 to 2 hour acclimatization walk around the hut and surrounding scree slopes on arrival. The terrain immediately around Piedra Grande is loose volcanic scree and rock with no shade and significant sun and wind exposure at altitude. The hut itself functions as the primary shelter, offering basic bunk space for climbers preparing for a Pico de Orizaba summit attempt, which requires glacier mountaineering gear and experience and is not part of this approach route. There is no potable water source at the hut, so all drinking water must be carried in or treated from nearby snowmelt. The hut and surrounding acclimatization slopes serve as the natural endpoint for visitors not continuing to the glacier.
