Nuevo León Weather & Climate Guide 2026

The weather calendar for Nuevo León: season by season, with the trade-offs each month brings.

Nuevo León is a landlocked state in northeastern Mexico bordering Texas, anchored by the industrial powerhouse of Monterrey beneath the dramatic saddle-shaped peak of Cerro de la Silla. It pairs a modern, cosmopolitan capital known for craft breweries, world-class museums, and rooftop dining with the pine-forested Sierra Madre Oriental, home to waterfalls, canyons, and the Pueblo Mágico of Santiago.

Monterrey and Nuevo León have a hot semi-arid (steppe) climate shaped by the surrounding Sierra Madre Oriental. Summers (May-September) are intensely hot, frequently reaching 35-40°C (95-104°F) in June through August, with humidity and afternoon thunderstorms increasing later in the season. Winters are mild and dry, punctuated by occasional cold fronts known locally as 'nortes' that can bring a sharp, short-lived temperature drop and even rare light snow in the mountains. Rainfall is low overall and concentrated August-October, when the tail ends of Gulf of Mexico tropical storms and hurricanes occasionally bring heavy rain and flash-flood risk to the metro area.

Best time to visit

Recommendation

Best: October to April

Peak Season: December to early January and Semana Santa (Easter week)

Avoid: June to August (extreme heat, often exceeding 38°C/100°F) and the risk of tropical-storm remnants from August-October

Notes: October-April offers mild days, cool evenings, and the most comfortable conditions for exploring Macroplaza, Fundidora Park, and the surrounding Sierra Madre trails on foot.
