Presa La Boca

Presa La Boca is a reservoir lake built in 1968 in the mountains south of Monterrey, near the town of Santiago, created to supply water and flood control to the region and since developed into a popular recreational lake ringed by the Sierra Madre Oriental. Visitors rent kayaks, small boats, and jet-skis from operators along the shoreline, or simply walk the lakeside path and eat at one of the restaurants perched over the water with mountain views. A typical visit covering some time on the water and a meal at a lakeside restaurant runs two to four hours, though anglers and those renting boats for extended periods often stay longer. Mornings are the best time to be on the water, with calmer conditions and cooler temperatures before the midday sun becomes intense over the open lake; the surrounding mountains are also more clearly visible in the softer morning light before afternoon haze sets in. The lakeside restaurants along the shore offer some of the best vantage points for photographing the reservoir against the Sierra Madre backdrop, particularly from tables on elevated terraces. Weekends, especially in the warmer months, draw the largest crowds of boaters and jet-ski renters, while weekday visits are considerably quieter and better suited to a relaxed lakeside meal.
