Playa del Amor (Hidden Beach), Islas Marietas

Playa del Amor, widely known as the Hidden Beach, sits inside a collapsed volcanic cavern on the uninhabited Marietas Islands, part of Islas Marietas National Park off the coast of Bahia de Banderas, Nayarit. The signature frame is the overhead skylight: a circular opening in the cave roof drops a shaft of natural sunlight onto a small crescent of white sand and turquoise water below, framed by curving basalt walls. The most dramatic version of this shot is captured near solar noon, roughly 11:30AM to 1:30PM, when the sun sits close to directly overhead and the light column reaches all the way to the sand; earlier or later in the day the beam falls on the cave wall instead of the water, producing a flatter, less iconic image. November through May brings the calmest seas and clearest water for the swim-through entrance, while the rainy season (June-October) can bring surge and reduced visibility that makes the short swim into the cave unsafe. Because access is only by boat tour followed by a snorkel or swim through a narrow tunnel, the beach itself has no fixed viewpoint to queue for, but the cave can feel crowded between 11AM and 1PM when multiple tour boats converge for the best light; arriving with an early or late-morning departure from Punta de Mita reduces the number of swimmers in frame. Tripods are impractical inside the cave given the swim-in access and wet conditions, and a monopod or handheld approach is standard. Drones are prohibited throughout Islas Marietas National Park, which is a protected marine reserve, and visitor numbers are capped daily by permit, so access is only possible through a licensed tour operator; a national park entrance fee is included in most boat tour prices. Photographers should protect gear in a waterproof housing or dry bag for the swim, since there is no dry storage on site.
