The Palacio de Gobierno de Nayarit, on Avenida México facing Tepic's Plaza Principal, has served as the seat of the state's executive government since Nayarit separated from Jalisco and became a sovereign state in 1917, though the building itself dates to earlier civic construction in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The palace's interior is best known for a series of murals painted by Nayarit artist Luis Almeida, which depict the state's history from its pre-Hispanic indigenous roots and the Aztlán migration legend through the Spanish conquest, colonial period, and the struggles of the 19th and 20th centuries, including the Mexican Revolution's impact on the region. The murals wrap the building's central stairwell and upper galleries, using bold figurative imagery in the tradition of Mexican muralism, though on a regional rather than national scale. The building continues to function as a working government office housing the offices of the governor and state administration, meaning public access is generally limited to designated visiting areas around the murals and central patio rather than the full building. Its neoclassical facade, with a symmetrical arrangement of windows and a central portico, matches the civic architecture of the surrounding Plaza Principal, which also includes the Catedral de la Purísima Concepción. Periodic restoration has maintained the murals and facade, with the building remaining a functioning seat of government rather than a museum piece.
