Laguna de Santa María del Oro

Laguna de Santa María del Oro is a near-circular crater lake southeast of Tepic in Nayarit, formed within a volcanic caldera and ringed by forested hills that create a striking contrast between the deep-green water and surrounding jungle vegetation. Visitors reach the lakeshore by a paved road descending from the highway, arriving at a small village with lakeside cabañas, restaurants, and docks renting kayaks and small boats. The lake's still, clear water supports swimming, fishing for tilapia and mojarra, and short boat rides that circle the shoreline beneath the crater walls, with local guides pointing out lookout points along the rim accessible by hiking trail. A relaxed half-day visit covers a swim, a boat ride, and a meal at one of the lakeside restaurants, while an overnight stay in one of the cabañas allows time to hike to the crater rim viewpoints at sunrise or sunset. The lake is calmest in the early morning before wind picks up in the afternoon, and weekday visits are noticeably quieter than weekends, when day-trippers from Tepic and Guadalajara fill the lakeside restaurants.
