Cocodrilario de San Blas (Crocodile Farm)

The Cocodrilario de San Blas is a small crocodile sanctuary and breeding facility on the outskirts of San Blas, Nayarit, established to support conservation of the American crocodile population native to the region's mangrove estuaries. Visitors walk a short circuit of enclosures housing crocodiles of varying ages and sizes, from recently hatched juveniles in nursery pools to large adults in open-air ponds, with signage explaining the species' role in the local wetland ecosystem and the facility's breeding and release program. The compact grounds also include a handful of turtles and, at times, other native wildlife rescued from the surrounding area. A full walk-through typically takes forty-five minutes to an hour, making it an easy add-on to a morning spent visiting San Blas's other nearby sites, such as La Contaduría Fort or the La Tovara boat tours. Morning visits are cooler and coincide with more crocodile activity, as the reptiles bask more visibly before the midday heat sends them into shaded water.
