Morelos is one of Mexico's smallest states, a warm, low-lying pocket tucked just south of Mexico City across the mountains, long nicknamed the 'Land of Eternal Spring' for its mild year-round climate. Morelos owes its nickname 'the land of eternal spring' to the mild, remarkably stable climate of its capital, Cuernavaca, which sits at a moderate elevation of roughly 1,510 meters (4,950 feet) on the southern slopes below Mexico City's high plateau. This mid-range altitude, well below Mexico City's own 2,240 meters, gives Cuernavaca warm days and comfortably cool nights year-round, without the cold winter mornings of the capital or the tropical heat of Mexico's coasts. Tepoztlán, at a similar elevation of around 1,700 meters and set beneath dramatic volcanic cliffs, shares this mild pattern with slightly cooler evenings. Lower-lying Cuautla, to the east, runs a few degrees warmer year-round. The state follows a clear dry season from November through April and a wet season from May through October, with heavy afternoon and evening thunderstorms common from June through September.
