Lagunas de Zempoala National Park

Lagunas de Zempoala National Park protects a high-altitude pine and fir forest straddling the Morelos-Mexico State border, centered on a chain of seven glacial lagoons formed at elevations between roughly 2,800 and 3,500 meters. Visitors can hike or ride horseback along trails connecting the main lagoons, the largest of which, Laguna de Zempoala, offers rowboat rentals for paddling across its still, forest-lined waters, while other smaller lagoons require short hikes through denser forest to reach. The park's high elevation brings noticeably cooler temperatures than Cuernavaca or Mexico City, and the pine-fir forest supports a distinct ecosystem from the tropical and semi-arid landscapes found elsewhere in Morelos, with the potential to spot deer, various bird species, and, more rarely, larger forest mammals along quieter trails. A visit of two to four hours allows time to walk the main lagoon circuit and rent a rowboat, while longer hikes into the interior lagoons can extend a visit to a full day. The dry season from November to April brings the clearest skies and best visibility over the lagoons, while the rainy summer months bring lush green forest but a higher chance of afternoon rain and muddy trails. Weekday mornings are the quietest time to visit, since the park is a popular weekend destination for visitors from both Mexico City and Cuernavaca; camping areas are available for those wanting to stay overnight in the cooler mountain air. The old Cuernavaca-Mexico City highway through Tres Marías provides the most direct road access, and a car is effectively required given the park's rural, mountainous setting.
