Las Yácatas

Las Yácatas is set immediately beside the Yácatas archaeological site above Lake Pátzcuaro, serving churipo and stuffed ancho chiles within sight of the round Purépecha pyramids that give both the site and the restaurant their name. Churipo, a beef and chile stew that is one of the defining dishes of Purépecha cooking, is the restaurant's centrepiece, cooked in the traditional style rather than adapted for a broader audience. Chile ancho relleno and enchiladas Yácatas round out a short, focused menu that leans entirely on regional cooking rather than any international influence. The dining room is simple and functional, with the real draw being the view over the round pyramid mounds rather than an elaborate interior. There is no wine or cocktail programme; this is a food-and-view destination rather than a bar. Prices run 280-420 MXN per person. The restaurant opens only Friday through Sunday, closing Monday to Thursday entirely, which makes advance planning necessary for anyone hoping to combine a Yácatas site visit with lunch, and reservations are advisable given the limited opening days.
