Cuitzeo del Porvenir sits 30km north of Morelia, reached in about 45 minutes by rental car or taxi along the Salamanca road, or by second-class bus from Morelia's Central de Autobuses toward Salamanca, which stops in town. A private car with driver hired from Morelia for a half-day round trip is another practical option for visitors without their own transport. The Pueblo Mágico sits on a causeway across Lake Cuitzeo, Mexico's second-largest freshwater lake, and is dominated by the Augustinian monastery of Santa María Magdalena, begun in 1550 over a former Purépecha temple. A morning arrival suits the monastery, whose plateresque facade mixing Spanish royal arms with Augustinian and indigenous imagery is best photographed in soft early light, and whose cloisters and open chapel are worth an unhurried hour. Afternoons are well spent on the causeway itself, walking or driving out over the shallow lake to watch basketry weavers working lake reeds into traditional baskets and mats, a craft still practiced by local families and sold along the main street. Simple fondas near the plaza serve regional dishes of lake fish and corundas. November to March is the best season, when migratory waterfowl gather on the lake in large numbers, making the causeway crossing worthwhile beyond the monastery visit alone.
