La Ticla

La Ticla, near the mouth of the Río Ostula in the Aquila Municipality of Michoacán, is built around a river-mouth break that throws both lefts and rights, paired with a long left point break that runs hollow over a cobblestone reef bottom further along the bay. The sand is coarse and dark, backed by low dunes and palm cover, and the beach has an open, exposed shape typical of Michoacán's Pacific coast rather than a sheltered cove. Water clarity is average, coloured by sediment from the river mouth, and the defining feature is the swell and current rather than visibility. The vibe is unmistakably a surf destination: the small, low-key village is built around a cluster of surf camps, simple cabañas and campgrounds rather than family resorts, and board rental and repair shops serve the steady stream of visiting surfers. Palapa seafood restaurants line the back of the beach, and cold-water showers and basic restrooms serve the camping areas. There is no ATM in the village, so cash needs to be carried in. Currents around the river mouth are genuinely strong, particularly where the river channel meets the surf, which makes La Ticla a spot for confident surfers and experienced ocean swimmers rather than casual paddling with children. Birdwatching along the river mouth is a quieter counterpoint to the surf scene, with wading birds common in the estuary shallows early morning. Access is by rental car along coastal highway 200, about three hours from Lázaro Cárdenas or an hour and a half from Tecomán on the Colima side, with buses on the Tecomán-Lázaro Cárdenas route dropping passengers at the highway turnoff.
