Boats are run by Pátzcuaro lancha cooperatives, and once on the island, lodging and meals are managed by the Yunuén community tourism cooperative, which has operated the wooden troje cabins, shared kitchen and lakeside restaurant for years as a locally run alternative to Pátzcuaro's hotels. No special equipment is required for the crossing beyond warm layers for the cool lake evenings, since temperatures on Pátzcuaro's 2,000-metre basin drop noticeably after sunset; a torch is essential for anyone moving around the island after dark, as there is no street lighting. A basic safety briefing at the boat dock covers life-jacket use during the crossing, and the cooperative's staff on the island are the main point of contact if a medical or safety issue arises overnight, since there is no vehicle access and evacuation would require a return lancha crossing, which does not run reliably after dark or in strong winds. The island can be visited and stayed on year-round, but October to May offers calmer water for the crossing and clearer, if colder, evenings; the June-September rains bring choppier crossings and a higher chance of the lancha service pausing in bad weather.
