Santuario El Capulín

Santuario El Capulín is one of three official monarch butterfly sanctuaries in Mexico State, set in high-altitude fir forest near the town of Donato Guerra, not far from Valle de Bravo, and known as a quieter alternative to the more heavily visited Piedra Herrada sanctuary. During the winter migration season, from November through March, monarch colonies cluster in the sanctuary's oyamel fir trees, and visitors walk a guided forest trail from the entrance to the viewing area to see the clusters up close. Because El Capulín receives noticeably fewer visitors than Piedra Herrada, the trail and viewing areas tend to feel calmer even during peak weekends, without sacrificing the scale of the butterfly colonies during a good season. A round trip, including the walk to and from the viewing point, takes about two to three hours, and as with the other regional sanctuaries, the butterflies are most active in flight on sunny days when temperatures rise enough to warm their wings, typically at midday. The surrounding forest is cool and often misty in the early morning, adding to the sanctuary's quieter, more contemplative atmosphere compared to busier tourist routes in the area. Peak monarch numbers and the best viewing conditions occur from January through March, before the colonies begin their return migration north.
