Parque Nacional La Marquesa

Parque Nacional La Marquesa straddles the highway connecting Mexico City and Toluca, a pine-forested national park that has become a popular roadside outdoor recreation area for both cities' residents. Visitors can rent horses for guided rides through the forest, try zip-lining and ATV circuits run by independent vendors along the park's edges, or fish for trout in stocked ponds, all activities priced and arranged separately from the modest per-vehicle park entrance fee. A row of roadside food stalls sells grilled meats, quesadillas, and other regional dishes, making the park as much a food stop as a nature destination for many day-trippers. A visit combining a few activities and a meal typically takes two to four hours. Because the park sits directly on a major commuter highway, it is easy to reach without a dedicated trip but also draws heavy weekend traffic from both Mexico City and Toluca, with vendors, trails, and food stalls at their busiest on Saturday and Sunday; a weekday visit offers a noticeably calmer experience of the same forest and activities. The dense pine cover keeps the park noticeably cooler than the surrounding lowlands, and morning visits offer the best light for photographs among the trees before midday crowds fill the main activity areas.
